Great crested grebe

Great crested grebe (podiceps cristatus). In Belarus it is usual and on many reservoirs a numerous kind of birds. It nests on the majority of reservoirs, preferring ponds of fishing households. On many oligotrophic and mesotrophic lakes it is the most numerous kind of waterfowl. The basic requirement to its habitat is the presence of sufficient width of a strip of reed thickets. In Belarus this bird appears in April. Autumnal migration of great crested grebe begins in October - November, its insignificant quantity rests to winter in Belarus on nonfreezing reservoirs. Especially on great crested grebe hunting is not conducted owing to low flavoring quality of meat, its pen-tip skins haven’t yet wide application.
