River Zapadnaya Dvina is one of the most important rivers in Belarus, according to the water content. It is on the second place only after the Dnieper. The river flows from Koryakina lake (Russia) and empties into the Gulf of Riga from the Riga city (Latvia). Zapadnaya Dvina flows through three countries: Russia, Belarus and Latvia. The length of the Zapadnaya Dvina river from source to mouth is 1020 km: 325 km are in the Russian Federation, 328 - in Belarus and 367 - in Latvia. Maximum width of the floodplain in Belarus is from 2 to 2.5 km, the average width is 0.5 km. The riverbed has a width of 100 to 150 meters and is characterized by sinuous, rifts and small nuts. The banks are mostly sandy and sandy-loam, but there are also wooded, moderately steep with boulders and low coastal plain. The basin formed 12 thousand large and small rivers. On Zapadnaya Dvina move ships, it is used for trade and transport links. There are the thermal and hydro stations. However, it is always open for fishing and recreation.
