General information

Biosphere reserve «Pribuzhskoe Polesie» is located in the basin of Western Bug river on the territory of Brest and Malorita districts of the Brest region, on the border with Poland and Ukraine. Predecessor of the reserve was the Republican Landscape Reserve with the same name «Pribuzhskoe Polesie», which was created by the Decision of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus on May 30, 2003 in the southern part of the Brest region on the area of 7950 ha.
In 2003, on the basis of the reserve, Brest Regional Executive Committee declared a biosphere reserve «Pribuzhskoe Polesie», the area of which is much larger (48024 hectares). In 2004, reserve «Pribuzhskoe Polesie« received the official status of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In 2012, it joined the transboundary biosphere reserve «Western Polesie», located on the territory Belarus, Ukraine and Poland.

Landscape of Pribuzhskoe Polesie is represented by a combination of forms of different ages and backgrounds. The main part of the reserve area is occupied by the water-glacial plain, on the territory of which there are boggy depressions that have arisen on the site of former lakes. A distinctive feature of the landscapes of Pribuzhskoe Polesie is the presence of numerous dunes - sandy hills along the banks of rivers and lakes. The height of the dunes can reach up to 25 meters, and the length of up to hundreds of meters. The territory of the reserve is mainly occupied by forests (62% of the territory), marshes and water areas (6.4% of the territory). The special value of the nature of this protected area lies in the fact that about 72% of its area is occupied by plots that have not been touched by human hand, which is why there is a high level of biological diversity.

Visa-free regime and ways of travel

Biosphere reserve «Pribuzhskoe Polesie» is located about 37 km to the south of Brest. Territory of the reserve is included in the tourist-recreational zone «Brest», for the visit of foreign citizens of 77 countries can use visa-free regime. Tourist and recreational zone includes Brest, Zhabinka, Kamenets, Pruzhansky districts and Brest of Brest region, Svisloch district of Grodno region.

Thanks to ntroduction of visa-free regime on this zone you can enjoy the beauty of not only a unique natural object, but also combine it with walks along Brest. In order to take advantage of this opportunity, it is necessary to obtain in advance in one of the certified tourist organizations documents that grant citizens the right to individual or group visits to the tourist and recreational zone «Brest», and to have a passport, health insurance contract, extending its effect on the territory of the Republic of Belarus and providing an insurance amount of at least 10,000 euros, as well as a completed migration card form and cash in the amount equivalent to not less than 2 basic values, established in the Republic of Belarus, for each day of stay. It is important to follow the main conditions of the visa-free regime - to stay only on the territory of the tourist and recreational zone «Brest» for a period of not more than 10 days, as well as to cross the state border through strictly established checkpoints.

Flora and fauna

Flora and fauna of the biosphere reserve «Pribuzhskoe Polesie» is striking in its diversity, which is the result of conservation and unique natural conditions. Most of the territory is occupied by forests, in which the diversity of forests of the Belarusian Polesye is represented. On the territory of the reserve there are endangered, extremely rare sandy meadows and floodplain forests for Belarus. Here grows 910 species of higher plants, 44 rare species of plants and mushrooms protected by the Red Book. For the cleanliness majestic «Pribuzhskoe Polesie» is the only place of growth in Eastern Europe, and for the fungus common and the forest mote in the Belorussian Polesia. In the early 1990s, a new plant for Belarus, the mistletoe austrius, was found on the territory of the reserve.

Fauna also does not lag behind the variety from the flora. The most studied group are vertebrates, of which 310 species are known. Also there are about 40 species of fish, 13 species of amphibians, 7 species of reptiles, 238 species of birds, 62 species of mammals (more than in any other protected territory of Belarus)and more than 18 thousand species of invertebrates. Here lives 44 species of birds, 9 species of mammals, 2 species of reptiles, 2 species of amphibians, 2 species of fish, and about 30 species of invertebrates that are included in the third edition of the Red Book of Republic of Belarus. The most rich and diverse avifauna. The unique inhabitants of the reserve on the territory of Belarus are the marsh tortoise, as well as the green woodpecker (one of the most rare species of woodpeckers of Republic of Belarus). Water objects, especially ponds, are the habitat and nesting grounds for more than one hundred species of birds, including those included in the Red Book. Here there is a colony of a large white heron, nestings of white-eyed duck, small pogonysh, big bittern, black stork, owl, etc.

Lakes and rivers

Hydrographic network of the reserve is formed by West Bug river with the tributary Kopayuvka, Lake Selyahi and a system of ponds in the village of Komarovka. Main river of the reserve is the Western Bug, which, thanks to the long border regime, has preserved the natural course and the pristine nature in the floodplain. Pribuzhskoe Polesie is rightly called the land of lakes. Here there are seven lakes Selyahi, Rogoznyanskoe, Beloe, Taynoe, Chernoye, Mednyanskoe, Stradeche, one reservoir - Orhovo, a system of fishpond ponds «Stradoch». The largest pond is the pond Tovarnuy, which is part of the system of artificial reservoirs of the fish farm «Stradoch». Average waterlogging of the territory is about 28%. Also, the Polesie Valley of the Bug River is included in the World List of Wetlands of International Importance.

Population and Culture

An important feature of Pribuzhskoe Polesie is its location at the junction of three cultures: Belarusian, Ukrainian and Polish, as a result of which there is a fusion of ethnic traditions, manifested in everyday life, rituals and especially in language. In the villages, elements of the old layout, characteristic of the territory of the region, have been preserved. Adhere to the region and unique local traditions of building houses and outbuildings. Many estates located on the outskirts of villages are built on the principle of farmsteads.

Wooden churches have become a kind of visiting card of the region. The oldest temples of the region — Church of St. Michael in Chersk (beginning of the ÕV²² century), Ilinskaya in Dubko (end of the XVIII century) and the Holy Transfiguration in Medno (ÕVIII century) are fine examples of the Polissya cult architecture. Church of St. Luke (1905) and the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the most naked Virgin Mary (mid-XIX century) are preserved in Domachevo. There is train station in Dubica of the end of the XIX century, which has survived to this day and still continues its work.
In the village of Tomashovka there is a military cemetery from World War I, which has an international status, where soldiers of the Russian Empire, Kaiser Germany, Austria-Hungary, Poland are buried. In Tomashkovka there is also the only Cosmonautics Museum in Belarus, and in the village of Komarovka there is home of the Belarusian cosmonaut Pyotr Klimuk. There is Monument to the children - victims of fascism in Leplevka, where children were killed on September 23, 1942 by a band of Germans.

Goals and objectives of the biosphere reserve «Pribuzhskoe Polesie»

State Nature Protection Institution «Republican Preserve" Pribuzhskoe Polesye» was established to manage the natural complex located within the territory of the reserve and the biosphere reserve. The purpose of the activity of the Institution is comprehensive satisfaction of the needs of citizens, society, the state in preserving natural complexes and objects of nature protection territories.

The main tasks of the biosphere reserve «Pribuzhskoe Polesye» are :

  • maintenance of conditions of preservation in a natural condition of natural complexes and the objects which are on its territory
  • organization of the implementation of nature protection measures in the PAs and ensuring compliance with the established regime for its protection and use
  • organizing and conducting of field observations aimed at studying natural complexes and objects, assessing and forecasting the ecological situation, developing scientific bases for nature protection, preserving biological and landscape diversity, reproduction and rational use of natural resources, participation in environmental monitoring;
  • environmental education of the population and promotion of environmental protection
  • preservation of the natural complex as a historically developed landscape and the genetic fund of plant and animal life
  • the organization and implementation of environmental education, education and public education
  • preservation of cultural heritage (objects of ethnography, archeology, history, etc.)
  • the organization of tourism;
  • Maintaining an integrated economy based on scientifically based traditional technologies and advanced environmental management achievements
  • implementation of economic and other activities in accordance with the established regime for the protection and use of the territory of the reserve and the biosphere reserve
To preserve the unique nature of the territory of the biosphere reserve «Pribuzhskoe Polesye» is divided into three zones:
  • Main zone (A) (4.367 hectares or 9.1% of the reserve territory) includes the areas of the territory with the most valuable ecosystems, for which the most stringent restrictions of permissible nature management are established.
  • Buffer zone (B) (25.337 hectares or 52.8% of the reserve area) includes relatively intact natural landscapes for which no change or intensification of traditional land use is envisaged.
  • External transition zone (C) (18.380 hectares or 38.1%) includes the land plots necessary to ensure in the present and future sustainable, intensive and ecologically balanced development of the territory.

Biosphere reserve «Pribuzhskoe Polesye» is a pilot territory of the project «Promoting the transition of the Republic of Belarus to a «green» economy», financed by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Program. As part of the project, an environmental information center with the possibility of accommodating tourists is equipped.
